Scams, Spams & Penalties

The world of search engines is constantly changing. If you are looking for a quick fix and guaranteed results to get your site listed you are not going to find it.

I put the topic of scams, spams & penalties first because, unfortunately, too many site owners get snared by those things first. They soon realize it was a waste of time and money.

If you see someone making the statement that they guarantee to get your website listed on all the major search engines, you need to hit the back button on your browser fast. No ethical company is going to make a statement such as that without first evaluating your website!

There is the site submission scam. This is an old one. They will offer to submit your site to thousands of search engines for one low price. They use automated software to do it. The major search engines caught on to that years ago and are programmed to reject submissions coming from automated mass submissions. Your site must be manually submitted, to each search engine, individually!

The guaranteed hits to your site scam is another old one. Don't fall for this. They are not going to send real visitors to your website, they will send computer generated hits. Do I need to tell you that the search engines also caught onto this one years ago???

It can cause your website to be banned from the major engines and can take months to repair the damage. Sometimes you will have to just start over with a new website.

Other techniques to avoid are: keyword spamming, alt tag spamming, invisible text, link farms, invisible links to offsite doorway pages.

It Is Not Just Metatags Anymore

Not a scam, but outdated, is the issue of metatags. Don't get me wrong, properly used metatags are important, but there is much more to optimizing your site than simply using metatags. There are still some out there that think that the only thing needed is metatags in the heading of your website source code. I wish it were still that simple.

If you have a decent site and haven't used any of the forbidden techniques listed above, your site will probably get indexed by the major search engines if you have included the keyword and description metatags in your source code.

But, and this is a big but, what good will it do you if your site is listed at number 899,999 out of 900,000 sites listed in that search results???? Get my point? You need your site to be in the top 10 of the search results, not the bottom 10.
